Popular psychology, or more commonly referred to as pop psychology, is psychology for the layman. It basis itself on popular academic theories in psychology and then reinterprets them in a way that is accessible to the general public.

The term is frequently used to describe new age practices and self-help strategies. It is because of this that the term pop psychology is often used to dismiss information as irrelevant. However every theory and approach in psychology has its use somewhere.

Types of Popular Psychology

Types of popular psychology can include the following:

  • self-help books and other information
  • every day advice that can be found in the media, such as a radio or television program like Oprah
  • terminology which has become popular amongst uneducated people, such as ‘left brain/right brain’ and ‘emotional intelligence

Knowing the warning signs to teen suicide could mean the difference between life and death for a family member. Here are some important warning signs to suicide and some important ways it can be avoided.

Teens are more at risk of suicide if they are:

  • socially isolated
  • struggling psychologically and emotionally
  • having health concerns
  • leading a stressful life
  • live in an unstable environment
  • living in an isolated area, such as a rural community
  • have a drug and/or alcohol problem
  • having financial difficulties
  • involved, or have previously been involved in any sort of abusive relationship
  • able access to weapons or other items that could inflict harm
  • suffering from any sort of personal loss
  • suffering from the effects of a traumatic event
  • confused about anything, such as sexuality or friendships
  • being bullied

Common warning signs include:

  • depression
  • obsession with death, such as talking or writing about it
  • isolating themselves from family and/or friends
  • verbally threatening to harm themselves
  • unexpected and sudden changes in behavior
  • making preparations for death, such as tying up loose ends
  • excess intake of drugs and/or alcohol
  • giving away personal items
  • statements such as ‘I can’t take this anymore’
  • deliberate self-harm

Things that can help prevent teenage suicide include:

  • a healthy level of confidence and self-esteem
  • a high level of emotional and life coping skills
  • a healthy connection with family, community and culture
  • a strong sense of personal empowerment
  • appropriate access to health care
  • good social and familial support systems
  • a clear cultural role in the family and community

Being mindful of such warning signs could help prevent teen suicide.

To put it simply, kinesiology is the study of human movement. It is a holistic approach to healing which looks at physiological, psychological and mechanical processes within the body to determine the underlying cause of an affliction. It is able to do this by integrating the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, psychology, and neuroscience into its practice.

How it Works

When we experience a situation, the nervous system takes in the events and attempts to self-regulate in order to cope. When this coping mechanism fails, the stress is reflected in the muscles as a sort of residue which then creates a specific muscle pattern. It is this muscles pattern that kinesiologist’s assess to determine a person’s problem.

A kinesiologist will monitor a client’s muscles and brain patterns in a process called biofeedback training, which helps to relay how the body is reacting physically to certain stimuli.
